Along with "http" and "ftp," there is another protocol named "afp." This is the protocol by which AppleShare IP servers communicate. If you connect to AppleShare servers over a TCP/IP network (ie, the Internet) or would like to, then you will find this app useful.
In OS 8.5+ there is an annoying bug that prevents the Network Browser from properly dealing with some "afp://" URLs. Namely,
• URLs which point to a specific volume <afp://24.48.72.96/Vol1/>, and
• URLs which point to a specific file <afp://24.48.72.96/Vol1/My File>
are not handled correctly. This program fixes the bug by filtering out URLs containing volume information and sending them directly to the Finder. URLs pointing only to servers <afp://24.4.66.150/> or AppleTalk URLs <afp:/at:/Pacific/Hard Drive> are passed on to the Network Browser.
Usage
Simple…
Put AFP Bridge somewhere convenient (it will auto-route to the Application Support folder). In the Internet control panel, go to the "Helper Apps" section on the Advanced tab. (If you don't see an "Advanced" tab, make sure that your user level is set to "Advanced" in the Edit menu). Then make AFP Bridge the default app to handle afp:// URLs. That's it!
Help!
Q. I can't make an "afp://" internet location file. When I drag it to the Finder, all I get is a regular clipping file!
A. This is a bug in the way the Finder parses many URLs. Namely, afp URLs that include username and passwords, or include volume information. To fix this problem, I've written another freeware program, Internet Location Maker. You can get it from my website <http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/~cleaver/software/>
About
This is collegeware. It's small, so I don't want to ask for money, but any small token of appreciation (pizza, software, poster, grant, etc…) would be welcome. =)
